Jim Boeheim’s legacy at the Syracuse men’s basketball team & achievements

On Wednesday, Jim Boeheim coached Syracuse’s men’s basketball team for the final time and now, Boeheim will be replaced by associate head coach Adrian Autry, Syracuse said hours after a 77-74 loss to Wake Forest in the ACC tournament. Throughout his 47 years as Syracuse’s head coach, the Orange has made 35 trips to the NCAA Tournament, including Final Four appearances in 1987, 1996, 2003, 2013, & 2016.

They also won the national championship with the 2003 team. Boeheim, a four-time BIG EAST Coach of the Year, has won 10 District II Coach of the Year awards from the National Association of Basketball Coaches and four from the United States Basketball Writers Association.

Who is Adrian Autry, career, history with Syracuse, & coaching experience

Autry, a Syracuse alumnus whose family bleeds Orange, played for Boeheim from 1990-94 and went on to a successful professional career, playing primarily in European leagues, as well as in the United States Basketball League.

The 51-year-old is a former point guard who played at Syracuse from 1990-94 and during his time there, Autry led the Orange in assists across all of his four seasons. In fact, he currently ranks fifth in career assists (631) and sixth in career steals (217) for Syracuse.

Despite his success in Syracuse, Autry went undrafted in the NBA and he played overseas across Europe in Turkey, Germany, Italy, France, Siberia, Belgium and more. He retired from his playing career back in 2005 and since then returned to the States to start coaching.

He began his coaching career in 2006 when he was hired as associate head coach at Bishop Ireton Catholic High School and went on to coach powerhouse AAU programs. Autry moved into the collegiate ranks in 2008 when he was hired by then-head coach Seth Greenburg as director of basketball operations at Virginia Tech. Prior to the 2011–12 season, Autry was appointed assistant coach at Syracuse and later in March 2017, Autry was elevated to associate head coach.

In seven of Autry’s 12 seasons as an assistant, Syracuse has participated in the NCAA Tournament, including trips to the Final Four in 2013 and 2016. Autry was recognized as a Syracuse LetterWinner of Excellence in November 2016 and was given the coveted Vic Hanson Award by the Hardwood Club in 2017.

While his salary as head coach isn’t known, ZipRecruiter is seeing annual salaries as high as $79,000 and as low as $13,000, the majority of Assistant Basketball Coach salaries currently range between $29,000 (25th percentile) to $47,500 (75th percentile) with top earners (90th percentile) making $69,000 annually across the United States.

Jim is being paid $2.8 million in the last year of his contract.
